Understanding Dementia Through the Eyes of Families
Sometimes the most valuable lessons shared at Harrogate Business Group have very little to do with sales, marketing or business growth.
At last Friday's meeting, members heard a powerful presentation about dementia, not from a clinical or medical perspective, but through the experiences of families living with it every day.
The presentation gave us an insight into the realities, challenges and emotions that dementia can bring, not only for those living with the condition but also for the family members and friends who support them. It highlighted how dementia can affect everyday interactions, routines, relationships and decision-making in ways that many people may never have considered.
For many of us, dementia is something we know exists, but until we hear personal stories, it can be difficult to appreciate the impact it has on individuals and families. The presentation helped bring that reality to life, encouraging us to see beyond the condition and consider the people affected by it.
One of the key messages was that dementia touches far more lives than we often realise. Whether through family members, friends, colleagues, customers or members of our local community, many of us are likely to encounter someone affected by dementia during our lives.
Why This Matters to Businesses
Businesses are part of the communities they serve.
Every day, local businesses interact with customers, suppliers, employees and visitors who may be living with dementia or caring for someone who is. While not every business will have direct experience of this, greater awareness can help create more understanding, patience and support within our communities.
The session was not about becoming experts in dementia care. Instead, it encouraged us to think about how awareness, understanding and small adjustments can help people feel more included and supported.
A Question for Reflection
The presentation concluded with a simple but thought-provoking question:
What can we do, as individuals and as businesses, to make our communities more dementia-friendly?
There is no single answer, but it is a question worth considering.
As business owners, we often focus on growth, performance and results. Sessions like this remind us that businesses are ultimately built around people, and that understanding the experiences of others can help us create stronger, more supportive communities.
Thank you to Colleen for sharing such a personal and thought-provoking presentation with the group.
